Luria proposes VA cost of living adjustment

Daily Press - 6/11/2021

Veterans Administration benefits would rise this year in line with Social Security benefits under legislation proposed by Rep. Elaine Luria, D-Norfolk.

The adjustment would apply to VA compensation and clothing allowance benefits as well as to dependency and indemnity compensation benefits paid to survivors of those who died in the line of duty or from a service-related injury or disease.

The compensation benefit is a tax-free payment to veterans with disabilities resulting from a disease or injury incurred or made worse during active military service.

Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits for approximately 70 million Americans will increase 1.3% in 2021.

The increase is based on the previous one-year rise in the Consumer Price Index, the basic measure of inflation. Inflation has accelerated since that calculation, driven by sharp rises in energy and new car prices.

Luria, who is chair of the House Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs Subcommittee, has introduced similar legislation for 2019 and 2020 benefits. Those measures passed with no opposition.

“The transition from active duty to civilian life is not always easy. My bill would provide a much-needed cost of living adjustment to disabled veterans across Hampton Roads.” Luria said.
