Veteran career fairs take place Thursday-Friday; 1 virtual and the other in Jacksonville

Florida Times-Union - 11/14/2020

Two free career fairs will take place next week for Jacksonville-area veterans, their families and active-duty military personnel who are planning to leave the service.

The first event will be virtual -- 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday -- and hosted by Disabled American Veterans, a nonprofit that provides employment and education resources to veterans and their families, and RecruitMilitary, a military-focused recruiting company.

“Whether you’re transitioning out of the military and looking for a new career or you’ve been out of the military and are looking for something new, it’s always a very daunting and stressful task,” said Jeff Hall, the nonprofit's national employment director. “This mission is made much, much more difficult in the face of a national pandemic."

All of Disabled American Veterans' career fairs will be virtual through May 2021.

"It’s more important than ever to leave the door to opportunity open," said Hall, a combat-wounded Army veteran of the Gulf War. "Veterans are not the type to back down from adversity. We are here to help make it easier."

The fair will feature employers representing a range of industries, such as construction, medical, administrative and logistics, with career opportunities from entry level to senior management.

Benefits advocates also will be available to answer general questions, as well as help veterans who have service-connected disabilities and may be due federal compensation.

To register and get other free resources and more information about Disabled American Veterans, go to dav.org/veterans/employment-resources. For more information about RecruitMilitary, go to recruitmilitary.com.

Additionally, an in-person job and resource fair for military members, veterans, caregivers and their families will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday hosted by the Jacksonville Military Affairs and Veterans Department.

The event will be at the East Club at TIAA Bank Field. For more information call (904) 255-5550. For more information about the city Military Affairs and Veterans Department, go to coj.net/departments/military-and-veterans-affairs.
