Centenarian vets among those honored at American Legion Veterans Day Ceremony

Progress-Index - 11/12/2020

COLONIAL HEIGHTS -- Veterans and families didn't let the inclement weather stop them from celebrating their service in the armed forces.

American Legion Post 284 took their yearly ceremony inside on Nov. 11. Among the vets and their families in attendance was Colonial Heights Mayor T. Gregory Kochuba and Del. Kirk Cox.

Kochuba made it a point to honor Lester Warner, a 100-year-old veteran who is "still kickin,'" and 101-year-old Elizabeth Piecek, a WWII nurse who is recognized as the area's oldest living veteran.

Guest speaker Col. (R) Michael P. Flanagan spoke on the continued activity of the armed forces, despite a pandemic affecting every aspect of American life. He also made it a point to highlight the opening of the new National Museum of the United States Army in Fort Belvoir, just outside of Washington, D.C.
