Letter: Volunteer drivers needed to drive vets in van to VMAC

South Whidbey Record - 10/31/2020

Editor,

Thank you volunteers.

We at the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 47 would like to thank all the organizations and individuals who assisted in building a ramp for our handicapped warriors.

This ramp provides easier access for our veterans who come to the DAV when we open at 9 a.m.

Previously, they had to wait until the Veterans of Foreign Wars opened at 11 a.m. to receive assistance with their claims.

First and foremost, I would like to thank VFW Post 7392 for letting us take on this project and our local Home Depot for providing the majority of the funds needed for lumber and supplies.

Next is a thank you to Rotary Club of North Whidbey Island Sunrise, Penny Durville for drawing up the excellent plans and Scott Dudley and Hector Powell, who provided much needed coordination with different businesses and much needed labor.

They are also DAV members; also, thank you for the many DAV volunteers including John Callahan and Floyd Hawkins, who provided so much of the labor and grunt work.

Mostly we have two gentlemen, Greg Maher and Barry Burton from Maher Construction Co., whose expert carpentry skills were a necessity. One last shout-out goes to Wayne McAninch for providing heavy equipment as needed.

All of these men and women working together made this ramp a reality and a success.

Now we can get our veterans in to see us, but we are still in need of volunteer drivers to go to the VAMC in the DAV van.

If you would like to drive, please call 360-682-2945.

C "Muggs" Monahan, commander
