Veteran fellow joins City of Sequim staff

Sequim Gazette - 1/8/2020

Thanks to a national program to offer transitioning service members some experience in local government, the City of Sequim has added Tyler Wiles to its staff.

Wiles, who has served in the United States Navy since 2016, is a Veteran Local Government Management Fellow (VLGMF).

The City of Sequim is the first government organization in Washington state to participate in the VLGMF program through the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), and Wiles is one of the first fellows to participate in the program from the U.S. Navy, city leaders said this week.

The VLGMF fellowship is offered through ICMA via a contract with the United States Department of Defense, offering transitioning service members the opportunity to learn about local government and gain experience as a part of the Skill Bridge Program.

Wiles began his fellowship on Jan. 6 and will conclude on April 24. During his 16 weeks with the City of Sequim he will assist staff in emergency management operations, the parks master plan update, event planning and operations, and the development of the City 101 Citizen Academy program, city representatives said.

Wiles has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and criminology from the Metropolitan State University of Denver.
