Orlando Sentinel - 5/19/2024

A 23-year-old man was shot by Ocala Police on Sunday as he was being taken to a mental health clinic, the Police Department said.

Around 12:20 p.m. the Police Department was called by the 23-year-old’s family members after he fled before being admitted into The Vines Hospital, a mental health clinic in Ocala, the Police Department said.

After a short search, law-enforcement located the man near the 5500 block of SW 27th Avenue just before 12:40 p.m., the police reported.

Police officers said he was acting erratically and posed an “immediate threat,” according to the incident report.

A police officer shot the 23-year-old, who was then taken to HCA Hospital with a gunshot wound.

No officers were harmed but the 23-year-old is in critical condition, according to the department.

The incident is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, per protocol.
