Mental health recovery court gets state grant

The Monroe News - 10/23/2021

Oct. 23—The Monroe County Mental Health Recovery Court is getting a $177,492 state grant for its operations in 2021-2022, with the amount representing a $7,500 decline from last year's award.

County commissioners voted 8-0 to formally accept the grant at their meeting this week as recommended by Brandon Roof, program coordinator for the court. The grant is from the State Court Administrative Office for the period of Oct. 1, 2021, through Sept. 30, 2022.

Although there was no matching fund required under the grant proposal, the county was asked to contribute $18,104 to cover overtime wages and fringes for a probation officer assigned to the court, and random drug testing and electronic monitoring, Roof said in a letter to commissioners.

Commissioners okayed making the contribution and also approved a request from Roof for an additional $3,115 in its 2021 budget and $14,989 to be included in the 2022 budget to cover additional expenses anticipated in the coming year. Roof said in the letter that First District Court didn't have any funds to offset the costs.

Each year, graduates complete the Mental Health Recovery Court program headed by First District Judge Jack Vitale. To graduate, participants must complete at least a year in the program and demonstrate constant sobriety, officials said. As part of the program, participants also are required to attend monthly court and mental health appointments, volunteer in the community and actively search for work.
