orangeburg county to honor veterans with parade, ceremony

Nov. 10--Orangeburg County will honor its veterans on Saturday, Nov. 10 with a parade and a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly built Veterans Walk near the County Administrative Center.

The parade will start at 11 a.m. from the old bowling alley parking lot on Russell Street and proceed to Edisto Memorial Gardens.

"On this Veterans Day, let us remember the service of our veterans, and let us renew our national promise to fulfill our sacred obligations to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much so that we can live free," Orangeburg County Veterans Affairs Officer Kenisha Grimes said.

Following the parade, a Veterans Walk ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at the Orangeburg County Administrative Center at 1437 Amelia St. The Veterans Walk, which is in the area around the courthouse, was funded through the capital-projects sales tax.

LTC. Broadus J. Jamerson III, retired, will be the master of ceremony. Orangeburg Mayor Michael Butler will provide the welcome, and Rev. Mark McClam of Trinity United Methodist Church will offer the opening prayer.

The Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem will recited and sung and Greater Orangeburg Leathernecks Marine CorpsLeague Detachment 1259 will recognize the prisoners of war and service members missing in action.

Retired combat veteran Robin D. Rucker will be the featured speaker.

Rucker currently serves as the 4th vice commander of the American Legion Department of South Carolina. He has been a member of the Legion for the past nine years, holding the positions of post commander, district commander, state membership chairman and State Legislature Committee chairman.

As a post commander and district commander, Rucker has won numerous awards for membership in the state and nationally.

He served with the U.S. Marine Corps as a sergeant tank commander in the late 1970s and early 1980s before joining the South Carolina National Guard. He served as a flight operations sergeant, officer administrator and police trainer staff sergeant.

Rucker served in Operation Enduring Freedom from 2007 to 2008.

He is also a retired police chief with 27 years of experience with both the Wagener and Abbeville police departments.

Rucker has also served for 20 years as a firefighter with Lexington County and the City of Cayce.

He lives in the Sandy Run area with his wife, Christy, and their children.

The laying of the wreath will be carried out and Taps will be performed.

Sponsors of the ceremony include a number of Orangeburg veterans groups as well as the city of Orangeburg.
