Service members, veterans in for special night at Boomer Stadium

The Woodward News - 9/5/2018

Sept. 05--The Freedom Football game and Military Appreciation night is coming up next week.

On Friday, Sept. 14, veterans are invited to fill the stands at the Woodward High School football field as the Boomers take on the Weatherford Eagles.

There will be a pregame reception at 5:30 p.m. and at 6:35 p.m. the pregame ceremonies will begin. Active service members and veterans will be recognized.

Game time is 7 p.m.

Admission is $5, but active service members and veterans will have free admission with a military ID.

"The football team will be wearing custom-made patriotic jerseys, and each football player will have a patch from a different military unit," said Event Coordinator Amy Whitewater. "Some of them are wearing patches that have sentimental value from grandparents, cousins, uncles, or family friends."

On the northwest corner of the field will be the Field of Honor, displaying stars honoring active service members and veterans.

The evening will benefit Warriors for Freedom, a nonprofit organization founded and run by a Woodward graduate. The group provides resources for those settling back into civilian life who may need a little help adjusting, said Whitewater.

During halftime, the Military Appreciation Night Committee will present Warriors for Freedom with a check for the money raised during the event. The dance team, cheerleaders, and band will also perform.

T-shirts will be available for purchase at 57 & Co. during the week of Sept. 10 through Sept. 13, or at the game for $20.

"We're really hoping that our veterans will come out to be recognized," said Whitewater.
