Annual FUMC holiday event to honor veterans

The Midweek - 11/8/2017

First United Methodist Church of DeKalb will have a special room honoring veterans at its annual holiday event, "Gifts, Treasures and Treats," on Saturday, Nov. 11.

The event will feature the usual gift items and food throughout the church, but this display is something new this year. There will be military items for viewing ? and some for sale ? with all proceeds going to the VFW and Vets Roll.

Vets Roll is a nonprofit organization that provides three-day bus trips to Washington, D.C., for veterans who served prior to 1964. One of the features of the veteran's room will be a video of one of these trips in 2016, and information about the trips will be available. Visit www.vetsroll.org for more information about the program.

Denny Heins, an Air Force veteran from Malta, was the recipient of one of these all-expense paid trips from Beloit to Washington, D.C., in May. He found it to be an amazing experience.

"I never served in a war-torn area; it was peace time when I served in Iceland, but there were lots of guys who did serve in combat zones," he said in a news release. "They came home and never got any recognition; some were treated very badly by the public.

"On this Vets Roll trip, there were police escorts everywhere we went, even streets in Chicago were blocked off for our passage. People knew what time we would be passing through and thousands crowded overpasses and roadways to wave flags and cheer us on. It was quite a deal," he said in the release.

"Gifts, Treasures and Treats" is the United Methodist women's main fundraiser for their many mission projects. There are no outside vendors and no charge to attend. There will be a bake sale, treasures room, coffee shop, soup lunch, as well as a few popular craft items and many gift baskets.

Hours will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.Nov. 11 at the church at the corner of Oak and Fourth streets.
